DSC01687
Over the past year or so, I've really found myself drawn to more neutral colors when it comes to buying clothes. I just looked at what I've purchased over the past six months, and the only other colors besides whites/blacks/greys that I have really purchased are muted blues and reds. All of this of course leads to a cohesive wardrobe, but...it can also get slightly boring.

So I mixed it up by wearing the brightest thing I own - this dress I purchased 1.5 years ago. At the time I thought I would wear it all the time once I was allowed to wear dresses again (I used to work in a lab where I was required to wear pants) but once that time came...I never reached for it. I want to make it a point of wearing more of the somewhat neglected items in my closet that I haven't felt a need to get rid of yet, so here I am...in the brightest dress ever. I couldn't help but wear it with neutrals but maybe next time I'll go real crazy and wear it with pink...or muted blue. I hope to incorporate a bit more color into my wardrobe, but in my own way (no neon ever. I just can't). I've had my eye out for a pale pink dress like this one for a while now - I think that because it's a softer color that I'll be able to mix it in well with the clothes I already own, and it could stand on it's own too with just a few simple accessories.

On a different note, I've been living pretty frugally for the past couple of weeks because all of my money is basically gone. We receive our student loan money twice a year - once in August and once in January. I think for the first year of living on loans I did pretty good, but it's cutting it close right here in the last week before we get our next check. The worst part is that right now I have total grabby hands - I WANT EVERYTHING (while talking about how I should wear more of the clothes I don't usually wear. I know). I try to delete the shopping emails as soon as they show up on my phone, but sometimes they somehow just open. I found this colorblocked blazer from Banana Republic online over the weekend and I can't stop thinking about it. I have wanted a somewhat more "unique" blazer (since all of mine except one are solid) and this has everything I want - greys, blacks, whites, AND TALL SIZES.

Next Monday's check can't come soon enough...because along with that blazer, these glasses are coming my way too. And so is this j.crew rip off tee (j'adore or you me oui?).

Told you. Grabby hands.

  4. Cobalt blue is one of my favorite colors - I usually pair it with a sort of burgundy, deep red, but I love the neutrals with it, as well.
I know how you feel with the grabby hands! I should be saving up this month so I can go crazy in the US in September, but somehow, things keep winding up at my doorstep. Le sigh. We should start a buddy system or something! ;)

    2. I'm working on it - I've budgeted out my US trip, and my sister will keep me accountable. And then afterwards, I'm all in! ;)

  12. OK this is one of my favorite outfits you've worn in a long time, so I guess that's a sign you should wear more bright colors. Or it's just a sign that *I* like bright colors...you can wear whatever you want :)

And I know the waiting for loans game all too well. But now I'm in the boat where I have loan money to last me through September, and then THERE'S NOTHING ELSE COMING. Yikes.

  13. My absolute favorite color, I think it's my neutral! I just wish that dress was a recent purchase so I could get my hands on it!

  14. You are stunning in cobalt blue! I have a case of grabby hands, too. I think it's because I loathe summer clothes. Once August rolls around, I'm all about fall layers and want to buy everything in sight!

    1. I think that may be it Jenna. I'm not big on summer clothes but FALL CLOTHES? I want all the things. Boots, vests, sweater, hats,....all of it.

  15. Cobalt blue is pretty much the perfect bright color, IMO. I really think it looks great on everyone and with every other color! I've had a cobalt dress on my wish list forever and haven't found the right one. But this outfit makes me want to find it sooner!

  16. You should definitely wear this dres more often because the color is beautiful on you! And it's such a polished, professional look. I love it!

  17. This outfit is FAB on you! You should definitely where cobalt more. I'm with you on the neutrals, too. It's pretty much all I wear now. To me, there's just something chic about it. Also, I'd just like to say how happy you've looked since you started dating your beau. Very happy for you.

  18. So excited you're getting some Warbys! You'll LOVE them, as you already know. Also - this dress - gorgeous on you. I vote for more saturated hues for sure!

  19. I think that more neutral colors are really having their day in the sun though - after the neon explosion it was refreshing to see more neutral, subdued hues back in the stores. Shopping (for me) was really boring this summer because there wasn't much in the way of saturated color. I'm hoping the pendulum swings back soon - but I'm not thinking it will just yet. I looked at Madewell's new arrivals last night and it appears that neutral-y hues are still in. Good for my wallet, I guess.

(I'm totally not trying to say you're a follower or anything ... I share your sentiments entirely. And your outfit looks stunning. Such a good blue!)

    1. I feel it's so on the far ends of the specturm - either everything is neutrals like you mentioned, or everything is SO bright. I hope they bring back more saturated (jewel?) tones like you said to bring a little more fun back into it. I'll probably stick mostly to neutrals haha BUT having the option would be nice too :)

      and I'm totally a follower ;)

  20. You come up with the best color combos! And it's funny, I've been gravitating towards neutrals too in the last months rather than my usual mint and pink ha.

  21. I love this outfit on you! That color is gorgeous, and pairing brights with neutrals keeps it from being too much (or so I've found, as a person who loves bright colors). I remember those days of living on student loan distributions...it always seems like the last week before they come out is the week you have all the expenses.

  32. Fran, totally understand your pain. There are some things I love at Loft and BR right now, but I also have to wait.

BTW, LOVE this look. I have an older cobalt blue dress, and I always pair it with black, which always feel boring and formal. I will have to try this color combination, especially since I bought that sweater thanks to you!

  34. Love your outfit. I think we all tend to migrate to certain things and then we get it out of our system and move onto something else. I'm totally loving all the fabulous things at Banana Republic. Gorgeous. You only have 1 more week left. Hang in there!!!!!

  36. I feel ya! It's how it always happens. No money. All the wants. Money is there. Well it can wait. I couldn't put my finger on why I was a little stuck with my closet getting more cohesive, but being a little bored is exactly why! I'll have to get in there and pick something out and mix it up.

  37. You look truly gorgeous in this shade of blue! I tend to pair cobalt with black/white most of the time, but I really love the way it looks with the light brown pieces in this look. Lovely and polished!

  38. Blues are perfect on you, Fran. You should wear cobalt/royal more!

I understand grabby hands. Trying to be good this month but I'm craving another maxi skirt or two, but can't find any that fit my bill.

  39. UGH so frustrating when you want to shop and the money just isn't there. It's annoying, but it's also a great sign when you are able to remix what you have and be smart about it.

Neutrals are always on heavy rotation for me too, but it's nice to throw in a pop of colour every now and again. This look is great!

  40. That blue looks really great on you! I know what you mean about feeling like grabby hands. Last year, I went on a spending ban from August - December because we have so much going on $$ wise (school...which feels like a never ending expense, Halloween, then holidays). It felt really good to not spend anything and then go shopping on my birthday in December. I might do it again this year! Or, you know, at least try to do it. Grabby hands!

  41. I love how you styled the dress with neutrals. It looks really good! I also know the feeling of trying to wear older stuff in your closet while seeing all the new stuff. I can relate to the grabby hands =)

Second of all, although I am ALL about color, I also cannot get on board with neon. I just. don't. get. it. -- Paloma

  46. YEP, this outfit is a stunner. You look absolutely gorgeous on this shade of blue (really all blues, because of your eyes), and I really like how the cobalt and camel look together. I'm pretty sure I don't have anything cobalt anymore, and I kind of wish I did since it looks so great with camel. Sigh.

I also 100% understand the whole grabby hands thing...I'm 3 months into a shopping freeze and want some new fall clothes. In all neutrals, of course.
