how do you pick out an outfit?

Boden Wow Pencil Skirt As a person who generally likes to have a plan for everything, I surprisingly rarely plan outfits ahead of time. A few of you have asked me how I put outfits together, if I plan them the night before, and how I get ready in the morning. I wish I had the forethought to really plan that in advance, but to be honest, I rarely think about what I'm going to wear the next day.

My getting dressed process this morning revolved around how my day was going to play out. We had to be in school for most of the day, so I wanted something I would be comfortable in for seven hours, so nothing too tight or constricting. I've also been making an effort these last few weeks to try to wear more of the items in my closet instead of reaching for the same ten items I usually want to wear (black pants, simple blouse). I've only had the chance to wear this skirt once since I received it, so I pulled it out, and then I basically hold it up to my shirts and see what I think looks good together. It takes a bit of the guess work out of what works together and what doesn't without having to try a bunch of stuff on (and then having to hang it all back up once you decide...or ya know, throwing them on a chair to put away later like I do). I've been really loving this necklace I got a few months ago (it's sold out online but may still be found in stores, although this one is almost identical and still available), and I love how it compliments the greens of the skirt. I choose the black wedges over the nude wedges because I felt it book-ended it all better, having dark on top and bottom.

So that's my getting ready process most mornings! I pick an item, try to figure out what goes with it, and then choose one "special" item, like a necklace or scarf. Definitely not rocket science but it works for me. What's your getting dress routine? Do you lay it out the day before, or like the little bit of anxiety in the morning figuring it all out? ;)

  1. I sometimes pick it out the night before and sometimes leave it until the morning. It depends on my mood before I do to bed.

I have realized lately that if I pick out a cure outfit before I go to bed I have an easier time getting up in the morning as I am looking forward to wearing it. Got to enjoy the small things!

I love the skirt you are wearing and your style. Your outfits are great inspiration for me to ear items in my closet in different ways!

  2. I usually pick my outifits the night before, but then I tend to throw it all away and start over again in the morning according to weather/temperature/my mood :D so not a great strategy, either haha

  3. Man this makes me feel so high maintenance. I have a little notebook of outfit ideas that I update once in a while so I can sort of look at a "menu." Or I look at my Pinterest boards for ideas. But if I have anything new, it's easy, because I just build the outfit around the new thing. I do that a lot because I shop too much. And I almost always pick everything out the day before.
Aaaaand you just throw some stuff together and look great. Isn't that lovely for you.

  5. Great outfit. I plan my outfits out, especially if I'm going out for a special occasion.I've spent way too much energy thinking I have nothing to wear. Planning this out ahead of time prevents me from becoming crazy and my room from looking like a tornado hit it.

  6. Usually when I try to pick out an outfit the night before, I put it on in the morning and decide I hate it. So I'm definitely more of a fly by the seat of my pants girl too. Oh, and all of the clothes I try on definitely end up on the chair in my bedroom too ;)

  7. If I'm on it, I pick outfits by the week, or at least half a week. If not...I'm a stresscase! I usually start with bottoms, according to what I'm doing each day and if I need to be in pants/shorts/skirt etc. And then I have no idea what takes place after that haha. Sometimes I'll run to Go Chic or Go Home to see the outfits I've stored, but since I've been pregnant I haven't really done that.

  8. I like to plan a week or two of outfits out and hang them in my closet. Sometimes I will plan something different in the morning if the weather changes or I try the pre planned outfit and it's not working. Then I add accessories after I put my outfit on. I try hard to save time pre planning though

  9. Normally, I'm the same as you. I kind of think about what I'm doing that day - how many meetings I have, how much walking I'll need to do, what my plans are after work - and then I usually pick an item that I want to wear and go from there. But during my 30X30, I pretty much planned things out in advance with a whole spreadsheet of ideas. It made life a lot easier! So I'm thinking about keeping a spreadsheet of ideas for all the time, but I haven't decided for sure yet. I kind of like letting the outfit come together that day. But then sometimes I do end up with a pile of clothes on my bed that need to be hung up before I can go to sleep that night! I guess I need a chair in my room!

  10. I really love this outfit. You know I love my stripes... this skirt is perfect. Happy Friday. Also, I do not plan my outfits at all which is why I wear so many dresses. Separates stress me out.

  11. THAT RING. Omg, I saw it at Dillard's a few weeks ago and it was love at first sight. Unfortunately, my lunch break time was over so I couldn't get it, and it was on clearance so it's probably not there anymore :( But I've been searching all over the internets for it! Glad you linked it!

  12. I love this look! you are inspiring me to try skirts -- I have pants, I have dresses but no skirts! I stumbled on your site a few weeks ago and you're quickly becoming my new favorite. Love that necklace so much -- ordered one for myself!

  13. OMG that skirt is fantastic! So pretty! My getting dressed process is the most boring...I wear dresses exclusively, and I rotate them in my closet based on when I've worn them last, so I just reach for the next clean thing in the morning...sometimes I'll move back and forth a little, if I need a more formal dress because I have meetings that day or something. But then I throw on a black or neutral cardigan, depending on the dress, and heels to match. Throw in some earrings and done!

  14. I really love this skirt and shirt together. That skirt is beautiful. I typically pick out my outfits in the morning, based on how I feel and what my plans are. I have picked out a week's worth of outfits before, but I usually don't allow myself time to do that, and then it's Sunday evening before I know it.

  15. Thanks for sharing! I always wanted to know. I absolutely understand what you mean when outfits revolve around your day. Next time I get dressed (other than in yoga pants and tee, etc), I am going to try to mix things up a bit to see what goes with what instead of wearing the same ol' thing every time.

  16. Sometimes if I have an outfit idea in my head the night before, I will lay it out. But most of the time, I just throw it together in the morning and hope it works!

  17. I really like this look! I tend to not plan ahead of time, but I do keep a list of outfit ideas on my phone (I have almost 70 right now, but most of them are for fall/winter), and I'll take a spin through those to see if I want to wear one of them. I pay close attention to the weather forecast because sometimes it changes overnight. I have a much easier time getting ready in the morning when I have something in mind, though if I have multiple outfits that I want to wear, sometimes I stand in my closet for way too long trying to decide which one to go with!

  18. I'm a bit of a zombie in the morning, so I really need to plan my outfits the night before. It's now part of my evening routine--do the dishes, pack lunch, pick an outfit.

  19. Usually I think about what I'm going to wear the next day when I get into bed at night. My closet is opposite the bed so I can look into it and get ideas. I also check the weather & usually stick to a schedule of alternating pants and skirts/dresses each day. Accessorizing is always last minute for me!

  20. I try to plan my outfits the night before. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. I do like to start with one item and plan the rest around it though. Love that skirt with stripes!

  21. I can't go to sleep unless I pick out my outfit... If for some reason I don't do if, my morning becomes VERY chaotic.

  25. Love this post! I actually do the same thing basically....I look at my schedule for the week noting any important events or what I'll be doing, then I check the weather for the week. Based on these things, I pick out a pair of bottoms (sometimes just a dress though) and then proceed w/what you do with holding the bottom up to my hanging shirts. :)

  26. During the work week, I always pick out my outfit the night before otherwise I would be late to work everyday. I do consider how my day is going to be and the weather as I put my outfit together.

  27. This might be one of my favorite outfits of yours ever!!!! I always read but rarely comment (since I typically have this toddler clinging to my legs LOL!) but had to write to tell you that you look gorgeous here girl. That skirt is amazing...

  28. I ALWAYS plan out my outfits ahead of time - it just works better for me that way. If I don't, nine times out of ten, I can't figure out something to wear so I stand in front of my closet wrapped in a towel for well over 15-20 minutes, just staring. Not the best use of my time, haha! I really love this outfit, by the way. It definitely looks like your style, but it also is a nice, refreshing look for you! I love how every piece looks together. Your necklace and ring never cease to disappoint me!! :)

  29. I have to pick my outfit the night before since husband works different shifts and he's usually still sleeping when I get ready. I consider the weather forecast and what I have to do next day. It actually helps me get ready fast.
