holes in my closet: pieces for 2013

I tend to buy pieces I know I will get a lot of wear out of, especially in my day to day working life. Obviously this is great for my closet since I buy things I'll actually use, but there are times when I wish I had pieces but I just don't ever buy them because I know they won't get a lot of wear - except in those situations I always wish I had them. So for the next months instead of buying another button up shirt or sweater, I'm going to use some of each month's budget to buy the following pieces. I'm going to take the time to buy pieces that I truly love and that fit correctly so I don't have to buy the same kind of item several times until I find the right one. These are the pieces I'll be looking for and why:

Suede Boots: I mentioned last week that I think I can wear more skirts and dresses to work as long as I wear tights and boots to keep my legs covered. I own two pairs of boots, my dark grey Steve Madden boots and my light brown Frye boots, but neither of them are necessarily dressy enough. I loved this outfit on Kate Middleton and although suede boots aren't necessarily practical for a snow storm, I think they would look great for work and social occasions. I think this will probably be the major purchase in January.

+ Nude Heels: So far we have 7 save the dates on our fridge for this coming summer, so there are going to be a lot of dress up occasions this year. I don't own any nude heels (or many heels in general) and so a nice (and hopefully comfortable) pair of nude heels will get a lot of wear this summer. I probably won't purchase a pair until the spring.

+ Wool Skirts: I don't own many skirts, but I think a few pairs of wool (for now) skirts would be great for dressier outfits at work and (hopefully) for school in the future. I've heard great things about the skirts at J. Crew so I'll probably try to find some at the outlet store.

+ Hunter Rain Boots: My dogs got to my last pair of Target rain boots, and between the slush we have now and the rain in the spring, a pair of nice rain boots will get plenty of wear. I plan on buying mine on eBay and hope to spend no more than $60. And don't worry, I'll only wear them when the weather calls for it ;)

+ Black Blazer: I get so much wear out of my navy blazer that it only makes sense to buy a similar piece in a different color. I was especially inspired by Kultur & Stil's post about all of her outfits with her black blazer. I'm going to be in Chicago in early February so I plan to stop at Topshop to try this blazer on.

+ Dark Brown Riding Boots: I love my lighter brown boots, but sometimes I wish they were a bit darker. I may wait until the end of the winter to look for a pair just because I'm hoping they'll be cheaper then.

+ Black Pumps: I don't have a pair of black heels that are actually comfortable or that I can walk in for more than 5 minutes. I'm pretty sure as a 25 year old woman that that is pretty much unacceptable. I need a pair of closed toed heels that I can wear for at least a few hours.

+ Dark Wash Jeans: I've been wearing a lot of skinny jeans lately (something I really thought I would never wear - seriously, 2 years ago I swore up and down I would never wear them) partially because they are so comfortable and mostly because I only have 1 pair of bootcut jeans I like. I would like to find that perfect fitting bootcut pair of jeans. Wishful thinking or actually a possibility? ;)

So that's the plan. Are there pieces you're on the look out for? Are you the kind of person who needs a game plan for shopping? I didn't think I would be, but I think this will help with the "buy investment closet pieces" thing I'm trying to work on.

  1. I really need to make a shopping list for next year too, I tend to shop quite "uncoordianted" and just like "Oh this is cute, I like it". But there are seriously some big holes in my closet - although I already have found my perfect black blazer that will hopefully last a bit more! And thanks for linking me by the way ;-) So back to the topic: I'm not a fan of suede boots (just because I wear boots only if I have to, so when it's cold, snowing etc. and then suede boots are not the most practical thing like you said), but I agree, they are very chic and appropriate for many occasions. I also definitely need some more heels in my shoe closet, I'm kind of a ballerina person, but nude heels are on my wishlist now for so long, I just couldn't find the perfect pair that I imagined, like with a small plateau, not to high, round cap etc. - well, maybe I just should order some pairs and try them on, I really need to do that, but first I have to check out what the winter sale brings ;-) And yes, you definitely need a pair of black pumps, I usually don't opt for the stiletto heel, but for a more comfortable (and "walkable") a bit larger heel (do you say larger? I hope you know what I mean). And what concerns the black blazer: I really don't know what I would do without it. And one last thing: I'd definitely search for reduced quality pieces, basics should be the best possible quality in my opinion, pieces that last for years (and not just for one or two seasons).
    Have a wonderful Sunday!

    1. I used to shop just like that, Anita!. I would just grab whatever I wanted and be done with it. But this whole blogging thing has really made me re-evaluate not only how I spend my money, but on what. If I had to do a lot of walking outside right now, I would never consider suede boots but I currently don't so we'll see how they hold up!

I agree with the stiletto heel. A larger (thicker?) heel is something I'm going to be looking for because it just makes more sense. That search for that will happen soon though as I need them for the end of January!

  2. I love those suede boots on Kate Middleton! Do you know where they are from (or something similar)? Nude pumps are awesome! I got 2 pairs last summer and wear them all the time. 7 weddings is crazy,,, I have a pair of black Cole Haan pumps and they are WORTH THE INVESTMENT!!! I've had them for 3 years, gotten them resoled a couple of times, and they are probably the most comfortable pair of shoes I own. They have Nike Air technology which definitely works! Great post, I think I'm going to take a look at my wardrobe and make a similar list:)

    1. Hi Erika,

According to What Kate Wore, they are this brand : http://www.russellandbromley.co.uk/womens/boots/icat/wboots/ I LOVE THEM. They look like the perfect boot so I definitely am on the hunt for a similar pair (that aren't $1000 ha).

I've heard lots of great things about Cole Haan so they will be at the top of my list to look at. Thanks for the suggestion!

  3. oooh i love that you put together a list for 2013! I'm definitely going to have to start thinking about the gaps in my closet too. :)

Are you planning on going with the red Hunters? I love the colour. I feel like everyone in Seattle has the green or yellow pair so it's refreshing to see the bright red getting some love.

    1. Yes, I think Red would be fun to have on dreary days. I was thinking dark green or black but that's a little boring ;)

  4. This is a great list of need-to-haves! I have been thinking about getting a apir of real hunters, as I absolutely adoooore their red ones, but I think I'll go for cheaper ones instead. If I may give you some advice: I think H&M oftentimes has the best blazers. They are rather cheap, but I find their quality to be better than most of their items! So maybe when you start looking for a black one, you can stop by them :) x

    1. I do like their blazer! I'll have to keep them in mind for sure. I find their blazers are cut a lot better than similarly priced stores.

  5. Apparently size 6 Hunter boots in Youth are equal to adult boots size 8 (according to Hello Fashion). They are suppose to be around $75 instead of $135. I know that it is still more than you wanted to pay, but I thought that I'd just pass along that little tidbit of information to you!

  6. Good idea making a list! I found it helps keep me on track when I find myself drawn to yet ANOTHER navy striped sweater. :) Dark bootcut jeans are next on my list and I'm hoping the Hunter boots come for Christmas.

I really like a lot of the items you've picked out--very classic pieces you'll use for years to come.

  7. I don't get to buy new clothes very often (we have a tight budget), so when I do get to shop I always have a list of what I "need" to get and don't often stray from it. I've been trying to be more thoughtful about my purchases so I get what I want but don't regret buying things or have it sit in my closet. I can't remember the last time I went shopping without a goal, like new jeans or a Christmas dress - the idea of just shopping for fun is so foreign to me haha!

  8. These are all definite staples that you need in your wardrobe! I am looking for a quality pair of nude pumps myself (I have a pair from Target because I wanted to see if I would wear them before I spent big bucks. Now I know that I like them, I need a higher quality, more comfortable pair!)

  9. Wool skirts are my favorite! And I need to start a list too...and stick to a budget.

  10. I swear to gosh sometimes I swear you read my mind. Hunters and other boots are on my wishlist too. If you know your size in J.Crew skirts, set up a saved search on eBay. I've scored a mine for about $50, which doesn't sound like all that much of a deal but when you live nowhere near J.Crew and your size sells out online, it works.

  11. Re: black pumps; I know it's a total cliche but I do love my Ann Taylor perfect pumps in black patent, with a stiletto hardware ball pad. Cole Haan's pumps are also a comfy bet. AT is pretty TTS whereas for Cole Haan I had to half-size up.

    1. Thanks girl :) Both of those brands are at the top of my list for shoes. Maybe I should just get 5 pairs of Ann Taylor shoes while I'm at it ;) Maybe make a circle with them and instagram it?

  12. Love your choices especially the Hunters :)

I'm on the look out for a printed blazer. Or a red or yellow blazer. Not sure why I want these pieces but I do.

Also searching for black riding boots.

  13. Comfy + cute heels are hard to find! I've had good luck with the Sofft brand - they have padding in the ball of the foot, good arch support, and about 3" heel high to make a perfect combination for wearing all day. Full price is a bit expensive but when Zappos posts their sale items to 6pm.com they are really reasonable! =) Might be worth looking at?

  14. Love all these pieces!! I could never ever have enough blazers :)

  15. I love those red rainboots! So cute :)

  16. Another option for tweed skirts is Merona at Target - I got two woolly ones from my local in a navy tweed and a silver/grey tweed and they fit beautifully and look great! Same goes for their Merona Maye pumps in nude - super comfy, I am pretty happy with them, considering I am normally a leather shoe girl :)

I am trying to fill holes in my closet because I have so many beautiful pieces but don't always have the basics to tie them together :)

  17. Ok this is crazy to admit especially since I live in Indy but I have never owned a pair of rain boots! Cray right! I have to get a pair of these Hunter brand navy boots STAT!

  18. Lady friend - I have a very similar post in my queue, and I love seeing how our closet "holes" overlap, but also the differences. I think it is important to pinpoint what is lacking, and then go about tracking down the best piece for you! Budgeting blogger rule for sure! Hunter rainboots are the best, you won't regret that purchase!

  19. Your selections are all classic and I can see you wearing them many years to come. I'm planning on doing a massive closet clean out before the new year so this will be the perfect activity for me to do afterwards.

  20. Haha, I totally felt the same way about skinny jeans! I remember thinking years ago that I'd NEVER wear them (BOOTCUT 4 LYFE!) but yeah, I'm a big fan now.

I hear Coach has some cute nude heels that can be worn with everything, or you can get 20 pairs of nude Louboutins. And you should get red hunter boots. and Theyskens Theory makes cute black blazers that are only about $600.

  21. I'm making a similar list on my phone to keep me on track when shopping. I'm planning to be serious about my shopping and investment pieces in 2013. And I feel so silly admitting this, but the top thing on my 2013 list is an Hermes H bracelet. I've wanted one for years, my last name starts with an H, Dave's last name starts with an H ... I think it's pretty much perfect. Haha. Time to start saving!

    1. I don't think that's silly at all. Once you have it, you'll be so excited to wear it. Plus with sentimental meaning it's even cuter :)

  22. GIRL! I *just* received that Topshop blazer in the mail yesterday but in pink, and I paid $37.70 for it, including shipping! I bought it from SheInside instead, and it's the same blazer but without the "Topshop" tag (I think it's from the original maker where Topshop is the third party seller), and I searched for a discount code on RetailMeNot.com.

Here's the link for the blazer you're looking for! All the measurements are at the bottom, so I had a good idea of what I was getting and it fits me perfectly. Don't forget to search for a discount code for SheInside from Retail Me Not.

  23. It's not like you need another person to tell you this, but the Hunter boots are totally worth it. I bought a pair a few years ago, and since I live in rainy Oregon, have worn them hundreds of times. They're way better than the cheapo rainboots I used to buy, that would fall apart after a few months.

I too am on the lookout for a black blazer. I want one that's high-quality, that I could actually use for years, but I also hate the idea of spending hundreds of dollars on one. And that's why I've been looking for one for years and still haven't bought one :)

  24. So many classic picks, love your list! Nude heels are definitely a must, they go with everything. A black blazer is kind of perfect for everything too. I'm starting to think about my next season's wish list too, though not too many things coming to mind off the top of my head (perhaps a sign of too much shopping this year... haha). Also, when are you coming to Chi???
