patterned

polka dot pants, pink
When I start school this fall, the way I dress will have to change. My school requires us to be in "business casual" clothing at all times on campus, which for the men means shirt and tie. The clothing for women isn't as clearly defined though. I know that blue jeans will be out of the question, so for the next couple of months I'm going to explore my options out there. Since colored skinny jeans just aren't working for me anyway, I'm really hoping that colored and patterned pants will be a way to add color into my wardrobe. I really like my polka dot pants - they fit a lot better than skinny jeans do - so I hope to find a few pairs similar to them. I'm for sure going to try these pants (one | two | three | four) as I think they would look great with a nice simple blouse and the accessories I already have.

Do you have a favorite store when it comes to buying "dress" pants? I have never really had to buy a lot of them, so I'm starting out new here.

  1. Oh my goodness, that's crazy that your school requires business casual at all times! I don't know what I would have done if my med school had required that my first two years haha. Now that I'm on clerkships of course I have to be professionally dressed, and my favorite pieces are fun J. Crew pencil skirts (bought on sale or from the Factory of course).

  2. I actually like Express for inexpensive colored dress pants. I bought full-length pairs and then brought them to the tailor to get them hemmed just above my ankle. I used to like Banana Republic's dress pants, but then decided that I'm really more of a dress and skirt person. They do have a pretty pair of yellow jacquard pants right now, though. They didn't fit well on me, but I really wanted them.

  3. The polka dot pants are so cute on you! For dress pants, I usually have good luck at Express. Good luck with your hunt :)

  4. Just saw your Instagram with your coloured trousers lined up - are you going to sell/rehome them? Until last August I didn't own a single pair of what I call "work trousers", I just wore skirts and dresses Monday - Thursday and jeans on Fridays. I've got two smart pairs now, the green and dark pink Boden ankle skimmers but no burning desire to buy any more. I do really like these polka dot trousers on you though :)

    1. Ugh, those dang skinny jeans! I am going to try to sell them first, and if they don't sell I'm going to pass them on to family members with smaller thighs ;) They're just too tight on me and it makes everything bulge and it's just uncomfortable. I love the colors, just not the fit. I think colored pants (versus skinny jeans) would fit a lot better!

  5. I so love those spotted pants... I need more patterned pants in my life - I really think you can do no wrong in these!

  6. J. Crew might be a good option! I have a few pairs from there that are "trendy" but still office appropriate.

  7. Ok I just bought my first pair of pants from White House Black Market - which I always call Black House White Market for some reason- anyway, I bought these pants and they fit AMAZING. They have a little stretch but are very office appropriate. Try it out!

  8. I get chinos at Gap and Land's End Canvas. Gap is hit or miss sometimes, but LEC has always been pretty solid for me!

  9. I love your polka dot pants! I definitely need to add some patterns to my bottoms. I don't have many dress pants but I like to check stores like Marshall's and TJ Maxx since they will usually have good brands for great prices.

  10. These pants are so cute and flattering! As for colored skinnies, I look horrendous n them. I only wearing skinny jeans with boots, other wise I look like I need to be singing "I'm a little tea pot." I really like the limited for dress pants, they fit my best and sizing is pretty consistent from one style to the next.

  11. Wowwww business casual every day!? I'm so glad I didn't have to do that for law school. However, if you can find outfits that are comfortable but still business casual that will be awesome!

  12. I'm pretty sure I've said it before, but these polka dot pants are so cute! I agree with Ginny about the Limited. She actually recommended it to me when I was looking to get new ones, and she was right. I've also bought some good work pants at the Gap, but it is sort of hit or miss there.

  14. Yesssss, I love all the pants you linked to! I've been wanting a couple pairs of nicer dress pants, especially since I'm entering my 30s this year. (OMG, I know.) Just been wanting to step it up another notch!

  15. I love these pants! If I'm looking for a "fancier" pair for work, I usually turn to the Gap or Loft–both have great options!

  16. When I worked with med students, we had a similar dress code, and there were lots of blouses and twin sets, dressier casual pants and skirts, and comfy but appropriate shoes.

I like New York & Company for pants - lots of times they'll have a sale, and the pants are forgiving. You can also just toss them in the wash instead of dry cleaning - a big plus for me.

  17. LOVE LOVE LOVE this work outfit!! Those polka dotted pants must find their way into my closet!!! and the colored chambray...beautiful!!

  18. I have a terrible time finding pants, so I pretty much stick to dresses, skirts, and jeans. I think I have 3 pairs of pants in my closet, and I honestly have no idea when I last wore them. I think my black dress pants have been in the ironing pile for at least 6 months. If you find a good place to buy pants, definitely let me know!

  19. Those pants are adorable, and I'm sure they'll work just fine. If you have access to The Limited, they have very good colored pants also.

  20. So super cute! I absolutely love this pants so much. Pretty jealous of them! And you are seriously rocking this whole take one item and wear it the next day thing :) So inspirational!

Also... I have had really good luck at Express for dress pants. I know they can be kind of pricey for what it is, but the dress pants there are quality and have lasted me a long time. And they actually fit my curves!

  22. This is fun and pulled together. I really like the whimsy dotted pants. These are very remixable pieces.

    Have fun.

  23. My favorite dress pants are from The Limited, Ann Taylor, and LOFT. As someone who has to dress in "business casual" 4 out of 5 days I have to know where to get good dress pants :-)

  25. love those pants on you! I never really jumped onto the colored denim trend because every pair i tried on was super unflattering...i love ny&co for cute, comfy work trousers!

  26. All of my dress pants come either from The Limited or Kohl's (Apt. 9). The latter is great if you don't want to spend a lot of money and you're fine with an A- fit. The Limited is great because sizing is consistent and I've never had an issue with quality. They have fancy pants for either the curvy or straight, and the Exact Stretch for a more fitted feel (go down a size in ES). PLUS you'll often find non-black pants on major sales both in store and online. (Last year I bought three pairs of pants because they were each on sale for $20 + additional 40% off.) I dislike pants shopping so I can't say anything about the other mid-tier stores; once I found ones I liked, I stopped looking elsewhere.

  27. I would be careful about buying cropped pants. My med school had strict policy about "capri" type pants and wouldn't let us wear them.

    1. That's a good point Lissa. I just searched on the internet and there aren't any clear defined rules for the women - apparently black jeans and a sweater are acceptable, but I will restrain myself from buying a bunch of ankle/cropped pants just to be safe for now! Where do you go to school?

  28. I love those polka dot pants!! I don't have much experience with dress pants...although I did get a few of mine at Express because the offer tall sizes but they are pricey. I found a cool pair of b&w patterned pants at H&M recently!

  31. I mostly get around this by wearing skirts and dresses rather than pants. But I just found a nice pair of work-appropriate teal pants on the Target clearance rack, and they also had some other colors, like burgundy. Could be worth a try in the next few days.

  32. Love those pants! The Med students here on the Vandy Med Campus always look so put together walking around in their professional attire & crisp white lab coats, while the grad students MAYBE change their t-shirts once a week! ha! I don't "have" to dress up, but I do anyways, because I am a weirdo and pencil skirts are my idea of adulthood excitement!
I have found the best fitting dress pants to be Express (for your basic black/gray/whatever), but Ann Taylor LOFT has fun colors & prints that also fit great!!

  36. I've been following you for awhile now and never commented, but I wanted to let you know I love your style! I'm a first year medical student now and we are required to wear business casual every day as well and I use your outfits alot for inspiration. We are allowed to wear ankle and capri length pants as long as they are dress pant-like. I buy most of my dress pants at New York and Company: one because they are always on sale and I've never had to pay full price for them and two as someone mentioned earlier they are at home washer/dryer friendly! And for med students that is a total plus for time and our budgets.

P.S. Congratulations! You are in for the most rewarding time of your life.

  38. I feel a bit goofy asking this, but can you explain the way your blouse is tucked in front but loose in back? What is the best way to achieve this? I always come out looking sloppy while you've achieved a nice look.

    1. The way I do it is I tuck the whole front of my shirt in while my pants are still unbuttoned, and then I pull out the fabric on the sides. It wasn't perfectly done this time but I drive 20 minutes before taking these pictures :)

  41. Love this look! I think ankle pants can pass as business casual...maybe with heels (which I know you're not used to!). I get a lot of pants from Banana Republic or The Limited. I am trying to focus my purchases more on work items instead of casual ones. You should rock some skirts too!

My favourites are the stiletto pants. Also, Target has some adorable floral and patterned pants in business-casual fabrics that are gorgeous too.

I love this outfit and I want those pants so bad!
