the triad

The Limited Ankle Pants + J.Crew polka dots I mentioned last month that there aren't many things I really felt like I "needed" to add to my closet (because lets me honest, I have more than enough clothes!). I tried to think about what I felt like I was missing, and what pieces would get the most wear, and I knew that full length slim ankle dress pants were something that I would wear a ton, both this year in school and the next few years on rotations.

I didn't plan on finding a pair so soon though!

My girlfriends and I stopped at our small local mall the day before school started because we were still freeeeeeeeeeeee...and because The Limited was having a 50% off everything sale. I found these pants tucked in the corner in the way back of the store, but was pretty excited about them since they were exactly what I was looking for. They come in tall lengths which means they actually go all the way down my leg, and the stretchy material makes them comfortable while still looking professional enough for school. I should be all set on school pants now!

On a side note, I found this red dress from Target online which could fulfill the red dress part of my wish list. I ordered it in a few sizes just to try on, although I'm afraid that it's going to be too short (it looks slightly short on the model). I'll be sure to post more about it next week for my budget recap (probably on Wednesday!).

  1. I would love to hear about your alterations method! I have a stack of clothes that I can't bear to give away, because they're gorgeous but don't fit right, so I've been thinking about getting them altered... excited to hear your insights :)

    1. girl, yes, take them to a tailor! you already own the clothes, may as well spend the few extra dollars to make them perfect (and wearable!)

  2. I say that I don't need anything and always end up getting something. That red dress from Target is so cute. Would love to know how it works out, as they don't have it in stores for me to try on.

  6. Speaking of altering, did you do anything to that shirt!? I love the look and pattern but it's so billowy and boxy-looking on me.

    1. I completely forgot - last year I did "tailor" it myself to make it less billowy. I just took each side in about an inch - it probably wouldn't be a very expensive for a tailor to do if you decide to do it (or if you do it yourself!)

  7. I have a question I feel my ability to observe should answer...but are there belt loops on the pants? I am on the hunt for dress pants and want exactly ones like these but am nervous of trying pants without belt loops since no pair of pants fits my waist AND legs. I went into LOFT the other week and couldn't find any slim ankle pants with them, but I'm tempted to give these a try! Why is finding pants so hard?!

    1. There are! I totally know what you mean about belt loops though - those striped pants from J.Crew I just wore don't have them and I'm trying to figure out a way to add them!

  10. those pants are amazing. i'm about to replace a pair of black ultra-skinny ankle pants from gap that i almost immediately grew out of (gd weight gain that comes with a full time job!). i'm thinking maybe i'll get them in a tall so that i can actually wear them through winter (since the "ankle" pants are more like "calf" pants on me).

when you do the most-anticipated alterations post, will you include what's a reasonable price to expect to pay for certain types of alterations? this has always been my hangup, just because i don't know what's clearly going to be a bad job, or what it is to be overcharged.

    you're the best.

    1. Oh I definitely feel you on the ankle versus calf pants! I'm so happy more brands are getting on board with having tall sizes (even in stores in some places!)

I'll definitely include what it cost me - I don't know how typical those prices are since I live in a smaller city, but I totally know that hangup on paying a ton for tailoring.

  11. Not only have you introduced me to The Limited, but you have made me a lover of that place too! Their stuff is great. I'm going to have to look into getting some of these pants for the colder months.

    1. Aren't they great? I think their pants are so much better than their tops there (I think they're way overpriced for what they are) but their pants are a great deal, especially when they have their 50% off sales!

  12. I think I need to try out these pants. I actually don't own any pants at the moment, but sometimes I need to be dressed up a bit and don't feel like wearing a skirt. I'm tempted to order a couple sizes online, but I hate paying full price for things!

And that shirt - gosh, you are a bad influence because I want everything you wear! I have the white/navy popover in a really tiny polkadot. I like the bigger dots and the black version. It might have to end up in my closet...

  13. Those pants look fabulous on you! I love that you styled them with black and white - I desperately want that shirt.

  14. LOVE The Limited. And their sales. I have those pant in 4 colors. They totally work for school and their super comfy. Bonus.

  16. I thought I found the perfect black pants last year, but when I wear them the waist band stretches out but the rest of the pants don't. It feels weird. Sigh. Maybe I'll try these!

  17. Those pants look amazing on you! I've been looking for a similar pair so I may have to try The Limited.

I am so afraid to take items to the tailor because so many places that I've looked up have mixed reviews and I'm scared they'll ruin my nice clothes! How did you find your place and how do you make sure your clothes come out exactly as you want?

    1. My city doesn't have a lot of tailors, so I just looked at the yelp reviews for the three places here and choose it based on that. In the past, I've asked other people in my city where they go and how their experiences have been. I also recommend starting with simple alterations (like hemming pants) before taking in a more difficult alteration!

  18. I'll be interested to see your review of the red dress--I've been contemplating ordering the same one for myself! I would love to have a classic red dress like that one.

  19. I loooove these! May you do a before and after shot of your pants before you take it in at the knees? I feel like I need to do this too since my calves are a bit wide for skinnies but my ankles are tiny for straight legged pants. I'm definitely going to check out The Limited for pants! I've been getting a whole bunch of misses, even from Ann Taylor and BR.

  20. How do your find the sizing of the exact stretch range from the Limited? (compared to e.g. J Crew's pants?) We don't have the Limited where I live and I've been considering buying online. Also, how high is the rise on these pants? It looks slightly higher on you than on the model, but maybe that's because they're the talls? I hate when dress pants are very low rise!

    1. I think they're pretty true to size - I am usually between a 10-12 in most everything, and I get them in 12s. I only have 1 pair of pants from J.Crew, and the fabric isn't stretchy, so it's hard to compare the two stores in my situation, but I have a dress from J.Crew in a 12, so comparable?

The rise is slightly higher on me than the model, you're right. I agree, I hate the low rise, so I was happy to find these. Helps cover up my little pooch a little ;)

  21. I need a pair of ankle pants like these too. I think I ordered these once but I returned them because they weren't on sale. But maybe I should give them another chance. :-) Love the purple wall too!
