february budget

1. Burberry Jacket, thrifted: $8
2. Barbour Vest, thrifted: $4
3. Ralph Lauren Oxford, thrifted: $4, $0 with Goodwill points
4. Forever 21 Lace Tee (seen here): $22
5. Nicole Boots via DSW (seen here): $110
6. J.Crew Tee (seen here): originally $45, $20 on sale
7. Blazer, thrifted & DIY altered (seen here): $8
8. Urban Outfitters Jeans: $40 with coupon code + $8 alterations
9. Christian Dior Blazer, thrifted: $8 + $25 alterations
10. Nine West Flats (seen here): $18, $0 with a Christmas giftcard from my girl Hannah

= $252

Well. I did not do that great this month. Even if I take the $25 "leftover" from last month, and the $25 I made from selling two things on eBay, I'm still about $50 over my self-established budget of $150. I do feel guilty about that because although I purchased some of these items before I found out I got into school, I didn't really try that hard to stick to my budget afterwards. My new boots are largely at fault - they're 2/3 of my entire month's budget! Besides that purchase though, I feel I found some really great deals. I found a Burberry jacket for $8, a Christian Dior Blazer for $8 (it needs to be altered around the sleeves though, so that jacks the end price up), and a Barbour vest (although I'm debating selling it on eBay as they go for around $60 on there) while thrifting. I also added ribbon piping and a new button to another thrifted blazer, so it was like a craft project/entertainment and a new clothing piece in one ;). I ordered the high-rise Urban Outfitters cigarette jeans in a size longer than my last pair so I can get them hemmed to the perfect length, so I'm really excited to have black skinny jeans again.

So in the end, I did fill a few holes in my closet with the boots and the jeans and I found some once in a lifetime thrifting finds. Like I mentioned, I'm really going to work towards saving money the next ~4 months while I'm still working. I am allowing myself $250 (around 10%) from my tax return (the rest is going straight into DO NOT TOUCH savings) to shop next weekend in Chicago. There are so many stores down there that we obviously don't have in Madison, so my goal is to find some of the following items:

- dark wash boot cut jeans, hopefully at Nordstrom Rack (like this pair, this pair, or this pair)
- tweed/boucle blazer (like this one, this one, or this one)
- Hunter rain boots (this color, this color, or this color?)
- bright floral scarf (like this, this, or this beauty)

I think having a list of things will curb my "throw money at all the stores and buy all the unneeded things" feelings I will have having that "free" money in my wallet. Hopefully I'll find a few things I'll really get some use out of. Of course, none of those items are actually necessary in the sense that food and water, and only having one pair of pants is necessary, but they are items I am hoping to add to my closet as I know I would get a lot of wear out of them, unlike some of my impulse buys in the past have.

So how did you do this month? Better than I did? Just as horrible and guilty? Link up below with budgetting bloggers! Please make sure you link back so your readers can discover and be inspired by all of the other bloggers who budget (even if they fail at it ha)

  3. What are these Goodwill points you talk about? I need to know. Also, those are some of the BEST thrifting finds I've ever seen.

  4. Yay you! Still shaking my head over the ridiculous Burberry find. So envious! As for your list, I hope you score great deals on all of them. I love all the colors of Hunters you linked - my favorites would be the original green & a glossy black :)

  5. I am also envious of your Burberry jacket find. Great job!

  6. Random question: what happens if you buy something in the next few days? Do you just update the budget, add it to March's, or simply not let yourself buy anything?

    1. I usually start my next month's budget as soon as this one is posted. So like the last 5 days of January counted towards February, and the next 5 days count towards March, if that makes sense. I would post it the last day of the month but for the link-up it helps to give people a few days to get everything in order :)

  8. You have the BEST luck thrifting, possibly ever. Seriously?? A burberry coat AND a dior jacket?!?!? WHERE DO YOU LIVE because I'm coming on the next flight to raid your goodwill. This one goodwill I go to in Miami always has designer stuff, but they like, know it's designer and keep it locked up in this glass case and jack up the prices so it's not even close to normal thrifting prices. I mean, it's probably still a really good deal, but they certainly are not selling dior for $8. Stupid Miami with their over priced thrift stores!

    1. And the barbour vest is also a really great find. I recently looked into getting a barbour utility jacket because someone recommended them and they are like $400 bucks or something! Ridiculous!

  9. I cannot get over the fact that you had such amazing thrift finds! I need to try that - seriously - now!

I haven't been keeping track of my budget but I think I am going to - you are inspiring me to!

  13. I will be linking up soon! I love what you bought...still obsessing over that Burberry jacket! Do you ever take some money from your next month's budget to cover your overage? I don't think $50 over is too much considering you were under last month and you bought some amazing and needed boots.

I've been considering Hunter boots too...I love the dark purple ones. I think color in those boots is necessary...so I vote red! There are so many fun boot socks to buy them them too!

  14. You got some AWESOME thrift finds! I'm trying to convince my husband to make a stop at your thrift store when we visit family Easter weekend :-) And I totally include items I sell on eBay as extra clothing income...makes me feel a little bit better because I'd be over budget then too, even though I did go over budget this month wa waaa. Hope you find some great stuff in Chicago!

  15. I think you did amazing, even if you went over your budget! I am super jealous of your Burberry find p.s. It is so cute and chic! And those boots are amazing... they were a great investment and will last you a long time and look even more expensive than what they were.

And yes, end of story, if I visit my sister in the near future, I would LOVE if you would take me thrift store shopping with you :)

  16. Ooh I will make a post! But regardless, the items you got seem to be big staples that will last you for awhile, as opposed to trendy items that you may only wear for one season.

  20. The Burberry jacket is definitely a once in a lifetime score for $8! I did pretty good this month. I spent $50 on 3 pair of pants at New York & Co. A buy one get one free promo and one on the clearance rack. That's probably a record for me! Heather

  21. So jealous you find stuff like a Burberry jacket at thrift stores! I've NEVER scored anything super nice so that's awesome! :) Love those green flats!

I found your blog now and I think it's so lovely and "inovative", because of your idea to show in every new look a piece that you worde in the last one! I have never seen something like that on another blog!

You made great deals, I know the problem with the budget. I've got one too, but sometimes I'm over it although I tried my best. haha :D

  25. You thrifted some AMAZING things once again! I see you got your jeans altered! 1) How are those jeans? I need some new black skinnies. 2) How did the alterations go?

I am basking in the amazingness that I have not shopped AT ALL this month (seriously a miracle), and I sold a few things so I am way in surplus! (A double miracle!) I wasn't planning to not shop in February, but I figured I've made it this long that I want to wait until the end of the month. But you'd better believe that I've got my eye on a bunch of stuff and plan to make up for it soon!

    1. Yes, I finally went in for my first alterations! I love the cigarette jeans and I hope they bring back the black mid-rise ASAP. I haven't received them back yet but I hope it all works out!

and good for you lady! I really need to not shop but...I can't help myself. Can't wait to see what you come up with in the next few months!

  29. FRAN. Real talk. What size is that Burberry jacket? I've been THISCLOSE for months to dropping the full price at Nordstrom because it's been on my "die for" list for so long. I will buy that from you, and you can make up your budget whomp.

THINK ABOUT IT. I'M SERIOUS. I WANT THAT JACKET.

  30. Ughh man, I'm working on tallying up my budget today so I can post it at the end of this week... not looking forward to it, I know I spent way more than I did in January! Regarding your buys: (1) I have that J. Crew tee in the coral color and love it, such a great buy especially for $20! It looks super cute on you too (from your last post); (2) it's really hard to stay on budget when boots are part of the month's buys - they're always SO expensive, but those are gorgeous and totally classic - amortized over the time you wear them, they'll basically cost nothing; (3) awesome thrifting finds this month lady! And finally, sorry for posting 1000 comments at once - I'm FINALLY catching up on blogging/reading after weeks of work making me insane and a zombie! Hope you're doing well! :)

    ReplyDelete
  31. Geez, how do you find so many amazing things at thrift stores?! I can't believe you found a Christian Dior blazer AND a Burberry jacket!

I love that you do budget posts. I've thought about doing them, because I love to read about the details of how people spend their money! But right now I'm on a shopping ban, so my budget posts would be pretty boring :)

  32. Dang girl, a lot of good purchases this month. I just don't get how you put up your recaps a week before the month is even up (and all those girls linking up already!) I mean, there's still 4 more days until the end of the month, which is FOUR MORE OPPORTUNITIES TO BUY MOAR CLOTHES. Though I did pretty well this month, only the old navy sweater that smells itchy that I bought with my credit card rewards, and that $7 Limited skirt... Soooo, you ought to be jealous of my great budgeting skills. I'm the best, you know.

    1. And I forgot to say that I'm still insanely jealous of you and Audrey's lace shirts. I found a similar one (with a pink underlay which was cute) at TJ Maxx the other day but they didn't have my size. They also had the salmon pink jeans that I really wanted but they were too big, which made me super mad. SUCKS BEING SO SKINNY (lol j/k) I think I need to start doing all my shopping at TJ Maxx now. Or Goodwill. Anyway, I like all your purchases!!

      Delete
    2. Well I see only one solution to your jeans problem: eat LOADS of sugar until they fit. It's a hard job, but someone's gotta do it.

      Delete
    3. I know! I was thinking that I may be doing it too early. Should I wait until 3 days before? If I ever buy anything the days after I post my budget but before the month is over I just add it to next month but I can see why that would be confusing. Is 3 days better than 5? And I agree with Audrey - more sugar = fitted pants!

      Delete
    4. well you and your sneaky "leftover budget" from last month and purchases that you made but didn't yet put on monthly recap... next thing you know, you'll be buying multiple pairs of mint skinny jeans, ugly red plaid pants, and $250 leather jackets from Victoria's Secret.

    5. Wow. I recognize you girls from GOMI. I was googling a blog and ended up on that site. I hope no other bloggers say the things about your blogs that you say about theirs!

      Delete
    6. I find it interesting, Marty, that you would read enough of GOMI as an innocent bystander to catch Kimmie's reference. The blog she references has 30+ pages on GOMI, so you must not be that disgusted if you spent your time reading all of it, and then somehow found my blog, reading all of the comments, and then letting us know that it's wrong that we read there, although it seems you do too.

The point of budgetting bloggers is to prevent us from cheating our budgets, so we don't fudge our numbers, and pretend we're always right. Hopefully that prevents us from becoming something that needs to be talked about on GOMI.

  39. I'm going to be an enabler here, but I feel like replacement items shouldn't count. And maybe it's okay to splurge a little on a higher dollar item (like fabulous boots) if it's something you've been searching for.

    I won't tell.

    ReplyDelete
  40. I can't do my recaps 5 days before the end of the month, because I never know if a "great deal" will pop up and I can't keep track of my finances to begin with, much less having to "roll-over!"
